SPOKANE, Wash. -- While Whitworth's women won eight of 11 events, the UPS women used superior depth to pull out a 103-102 dual meet victory over the Pirates and avoid only its second Northwest Conference loss in 10 years as a member of the NWC. Meanwhile, the Whitworth men won nine of 11 events to run away with a 138-64 win over the visiting Loggers and extend their own NWC dual meet winning streak to 42 straight over the last seven seasons. Samantha Kephart won three individual events for Whitworth, while Brittany Gresset and Katelyn Erickson won two individual events after combining to lead the Pirates to victory in the 200 Medley Relay. But Puget Sound finished 1-2-3 in both the 1,000 Freestyle and 400 Individual Medley to outscore Whitworth 32-6 in those two races. Trailing 100-88 heading into the final relay, the Loggers finished 1-2 to outscore the Pirates 15-2 and pull out the one point victory. Kephart won the 200 Free (1:57.03), 100 Fly (58.75) and 500 Free (5:12.49). Gresset won the 50 (24.97) and 100 (54.44) Freestyle races. Erickson won the 100 Backstroke (1:01.22) and 100 Breaststroke (1:10.31) races. Gresset and Erickson were joined by Lindsey Gresset and Luan Ly to win the 200 Medley Relay (1:53.74) to open the meet. Jane Kestner led the Logger sweep in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:57.43. Beth Demander led the UPS sweep of the 400 Individual Medley (4:51.86). Johanna Root, Jennifer Hampton, Alycia Corey and Helen McDonald won the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:47.99. The Logger women's only loss in their 10-year history as part of the NWC was a dual meet loss at Whitman College during the 2000-2001 season. They have swept nine NWC Championship meets in a row and are aiming for their tenth this season. David Dolphay and Steve Garka each won a pair of events to lead the Pirate men. Dolphay swept the distance Freestyle events, winning the 1,000 (10:01.53) and the 500 (4:50.13), while Garka swept the sprint Freestyle events, winning the 50 (21.71) and 100 (49.42). Whitworth seniors David Lillard and Loren Killgore won once in their final home dual meet of their careers. Lillard won the 200 Freestyle (1:47.41) while Killgore won the 400 I.M. (4:11.96). Whitworth's Luke Stocker came from behind in the final 15 yards to win the 100 Backstroke (55.37), edging Garrett Gentling of UPS (55.42). The Pirates closed the meet with a win in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:28.11). UPS opened the men's meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay (1:39.95), but then lost the next eight races in a row. Paul Hughes broke the streak for the Loggers when he nipped Whitworth's Bryan Clarke 59.62 - 59.71 in the 100 Breaststroke. Both teams will now focus on the 2006 Northwest Conference championships, while will be held February 10-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington.
