SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth College established five new season best times as the Pirate men and women swept a pair of dual meets against visiting Willamette University on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Aquatic Center. The Whitworth men won 128-46, while the women won 106-82. The Pirates changed the entries on their final two events to exhibition swims after the team victories had been clinched.
The Pirate men won eight of the first nine events before the final exhibitions. Sophomore David Dolphay won both distance events, taking the 1,650 Freestyle in 16:42.18 and the 500 Freestyle in 4:46.58. The time in the 500 is a season-best for Whitworth. Sophomore Luke Stocker won both the 200 Freestyle (1:52.92) and 200 Backstroke (2:02.05) for the Pirates. Senior Loren Killgore dominated the 200 Individual Medley with a season-best time of 1:59.54. Whitworth freshman Steve Garka and Willamette senior Kei Ottawa had the two best races of the day. Ottawa edged Garka in the 50 Freestyle 22.21 - 22.46, but Garka came back to nip Ottawa in the 100 Freestyle 48.58 - 48.83. Ottawa was credited for a win in the 200 Breaststroke (2:18.05) after Whitworth's Bryan Clarke (2:13.50) was changed to an exhibition swimmer prior to the race.
Whitworth freshman Brittney Gressett and sophomore Samantha Kephart won a pair of events apiece to lead the Pirate women. Gressett won the 200 I.M. in a season-best 2:18.20 and the 100 Freestyle in 54.92. Kephart won the 200 Butterfly (2:05.21) and 500 Freestyle (5:13.34). Luan Ly led a 1-2-3 Whitworth sweep in the 50 Freestyle with a season best time of 25.88. Willamette's Shannon Gima held off Whitworth's Rebekah List 2:18.13 - 2:19.58 to win the 200 Backstroke. Whitworth's Katelyn Erickson won the 200 Freestyle in 2:03.08. Her time in the 200 Breaststroke (2:35.06) is a season-best for the Pirates, but she did not score after being declared as a exhibition swimmer.
