Kephart set a new pool record in the 1000

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth College's Samantha Kephart broke a long-standing team and pool record, and the Pirates won six of 11 events, but visiting Whitman College won both relays and used a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 Individual Medley to pull out a 106-99 victory in a Northwest Conference women's swimming dual meet on Wednesday night. Whitworth's men rolled to a 119-43 win to remain unbeaten in NWC meets.

Kephart won two events, including the 1,000 Freestyle in which her time of 10:39.60 broke the Whitworth team and Whitworth Aquatic Center record of 10:41.81 set by Mindy Galbraith in January of 1998. Kephart also won the 500 Freestyle in 5:10.14.

Whitman's Nancy Alexander and Whitworth's Katelyn Erickson dueled twice in individual races and each came away with one win. Erickson nipped Alexander in the 200 Freestyle 2:01.62 - 2:01.87. But Alexander came back to win the 100 Backstroke in 1:01.58 to Erickson's 1:01.74.

Erickson also won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:11.62, edging Whitman's Alexis Jinbo-Doran (1:11.78). That win gave the Pirates their final lead of 95-93 heading into the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Whitman won the last relay handily, along with the meet's opening 200 Medley Relay. The Missionaries outscored the Pirates 26-8 in the two relays. Whitman also outscored Whitworth 16-3 in the 400 I.M. by finishing 1-2-3. Alexis Krupp won the race in 4:55.66.

Lillard has the NWC's best 100 Fly time in '06

Whitman's other win was Erin Petterson's victory in the 100 Butterfly in a time of 1:01.66. Whitworth's Brittany Gresset won two races, taking the 50 Freestyle in 24.91 and the 100 Freestyle in 54.56.

Whitworth's men won eight of ten scored events, however the Pirates changed the entries on the final two races to exhibitions before the meet was over. David Dolphay won the 200 Freestyle (1:47.01) and 500 Freestyle (4:49.34), while Loren Killgore won the 400 I.M. (4:18.97) and the 100 Backstroke (56.12). While they were Whitworth's multiple individual event winners, David Lillard had the best performance of the night, posting a winning time of 53.76 in the 100 Butterfly to establish a new best time for the Northwest Conference this season. Steve Garka's winning time in the 50 Free (21.74) was just off of his NWC-best mark of 21.70.

Whitman's Max Hennings was the only competitor in the 1,000 Freestyle (12:02.97). Clint Collier gets credit for a win in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.64) after Whitworth's swimmers were declared as exhibition entries.
