Whitworth Sweeps Duals at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- (From Pacific Sports Information Office) Whitworth's powerful swim program had its way with Pacific's small, upstart swim program as the Pirates collected a pair of Northwest Conference swimming dual meets Friday night at the Forest Grove Aquatic Center.

The Pirate men won seven of nine individual events and set a pair of pool records in the relays as they bettered the Boxers 147-29. Whitworth's women set four new pool records and won eight of nine individual events for a
145-36 victory over the Boxers.

Nathan Smith won two events for Pacific, capturing the 50-yard freestyle in 22.35 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.02 seconds. The sophomore, however, saw his 10-race winning streak come to an end in his final event of the night, finishing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.71.

Kristen Mathis earned the Boxer women's lone victory of the evening, winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:14.58. Her first race in the event this season, Mathis' time is a Pacific season best.

Rowena Manabat was second in the 50-yard freestyle with her time of 27.67 seconds and in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.39. Alex Prigge earned second place in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in 5:43.14. In addition, the Boxers' 200-yard medley relay team established a new season best with a time of 2:04.36.

Samantha Kephart, Brittany Gresset and Natalie Turner each won two races to lead the Whitworth women. Gresset earned two pool records with her victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.99) and in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.27). Turner set a pool record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:10.15) in addition to winning the 500-yard freestyle (5:27.72). Kephart was a winner in the 50-yard freestyle (25.44) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.97). The Pirates¹ 200-yard medley relay team also set a pool record, winning the race in a time of 1:55.08.

Kris Asleson and Daniel Bergman each won two races to pace the Whitworth men. Asleson was a winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.39) and in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.91), while Bergman captured the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.12) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:37.62). The Pirates also set pool records in the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.21) and in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.39).

Pacific returns to action in the home waters on Saturday afternoon, playing host to Whitman. Whitworth will head south to dual Linfield.
