Whitworth Women End UPS Streak; Men's Remains
Jan. 20, 2007

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Whitworth women's swimming team ended a twenty-year losing streak to Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon, gaining the first dual meet victory over the Logger women since the Pirate varsity program was reinstated during the 1985-86 season.

Kephart won twice

The Whitworth men extended their own NWC dual meet winning streak to 49 in a row with at win at UPS. The Pirate men won 116-89, while the Whitworth women won 122-83.

Samantha Kephart led the Pirate women by winning a pair of individual races and also anchoring the winning 4x100 meter Free Relay. The relay's time was 4:07.29. Kephart won the 200 meter Freestyle in a time of 2:11.15 and the 200 meter Butterfly in 2:25.72.

Katelyn Erickson also won twice, taking the 200 meter Individual Medley (2:29.56) and the 200 Backstroke (2:29.09). Brittany Gresset swept the spring freestyles, while Natalie Turner swept the distance races. Gresset won the 50 Free (27.32) and 100 Free (1:00.35), and Turner won the 400 Free (4:34.38) and 800 Free (9:36.10).

In its 11th year as an NWC member, UPS had only lost on meet to a conference opponent. In 2001 the Loggers split their squad and sent the "B" team to Whitman, where they were defeated by the Missionaries. This was the first ever loss by UPS as a full strength squad.

Dolphay won three times

Of the eight individual races won by the Pirate women, Whitworth finished first and second in five and first and third in another.

The Whitworth men won seven of the 11 races, led by David Dolphay's three individual victories. Dolphay won the 800 Freestyle in 9:01.45 before coming right back and winning the 200 Free in 1:59.32. He then won the 400 Free in 4:10.49.

Bryan Clarke came up big for the Bucs also. He won the 200 I.M. in 2:16.23 and won the 200 Breaststroke in 2:30.70. He also swam breaststroke on the winning 400 Medley Relay (4:03.49). Jason Hunter led a 1-2 Pirate finish in the 200 Butterfly with a winning time of 2:19.44.

Whitworth's teams will now get ready for the NWC Championships in three weeks (Feb. 9-11) at Whitman College in Walla Walla. The Pirate men are aiming for their fifth straight title and sixth in the last seven years. The Whitworth women hope to win their first title since 1995.
