SPOKANE, Wash. -- One of the all-time greatest athletes in Whitworth University history will compete for the final time at the Whitworth Aquatic Center on Saturday. Samantha Kephart (Sr., Santa Maria, Calif. - St. Joseph) headlines a list of ten Whitworth seniors who will suit up for the final time at home during Saturday afternoon's dual meet against the University of Puget Sound.
The Seniors: Kephart is the NCAA Division III record holder in the 200 butterfly (2:00.15) and is a two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NCAA All-American in nine career events to date. She was an honorable mention All-American in the other two events. As a sophomore in 2006, Kephart won NCAA Division III titles in the 100 and 200 butterfly, setting the NCAA Division III record while winning the 200 event. In addition to her two NCAA titles, Kephart has finished second twice and third once. Bekah List (Sr., Ringold, Ga. - Baylor School), Kailey Nelson (Sr., Puyallup, Wash. - Puyallup), and Marjorie Turner (Sr., South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe) are also competing in their final meet at home for the Whitworth women. Turner has been an All-NWC backstroke competitor for the Pirates. David Dolphay (Sr., Great Falls, Mont. - Great Falls) leads a list of six Whitworth men who have continued one of the most dominant streaks in Whitworth history. Dolphay has won all six of the Northwest Conference championship events in which he has ever competed. He will return to defend his titles in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyles this year.
He will be joined in pre-meet recognition by Scott Adams (Sr., Gilroy, Calif. - Vine Acad.), Bryan Clarke (Sr., Seattle, Wash. - Chief Stealth), Jason Hunter (Sr., Oak Harbor, Wash.), Josh McDowell (Sr., Shelton, Wash. - Shelton) and Luke Stocker (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska - West Anchorage). Clarke is the defending NWC champion in the 200 breaststroke, while McDowell and Hunter have been All-NWC finishers in the butterfly and Stocker an All-NWC finisher in the backstroke. This group of six have been part of three of the five straight NWC titles won by the Pirate men. All ten will be recognized for their accomplishments prior to the start of the first race on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates: Whitworth's women head into the final dual meet with a 9-0 overall record (6-0 in the NWC). The Pirates have the conference's best time in nine of the 14 individual championship events and all five relays. Natalie Turner (So., South Lake Tahoe, Wash.) has dominated the freestyle events (leading the 100, 200, 500 and 1,650), while Kephart has dominated the butterfly events. Brittany Gresset (Jr., Seattle, Wash. - Mt. Rainier) leads in the 50 freestyle, Marjorie Turner in the 200 backstroke and Yasi Kheshgi (So., Evanston, Ill.) in the 400 individual medley. Whitworth is hoping to break the UPS stranglehold on the NWC women's title. The Loggers have won 11 conference championships in a row since joining the NWC for the 1996-97 season. The Whitworth men (7-2 overall, 6-0 NWC) will try to win their sixth straight conference title and seventh in the last eight years. The Pirates have won 56 NWC dual meets in a row and are unbeaten since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season (nine years). Michael Woodward (Fr., Springfield, Ore.) leads the NWC this season in the 100 and 200 freestyles and also has the conference's top time in the 200 individual medley. Dolphay is the top NWC performer in the 500 and 1,650 freestyles this season. The Bucs also have the conference's fastest times in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, along with the 400 medley relay. The meet: The first event will begin against UPS at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Whitworth Aquatic Center. The Whitworth women knocked off the Loggers in a dual meet last season, but UPS came back to win the NWC title with the Pirates taking second place. The Logger women have the conference's fastest times this season in both breaststroke races and the 200 individual medley (all by Amy Polansky). UPS comes into the weekend 5-0 overall and 5-0 in the NWC. Click here for the NWC women's top times. The UPS men were the last team besides Whitworth to win a conference title (2002). The Loggers (3-2 overall, 3-2 NWC) have the NWC's best times in five individual events and both the 200 free and 200 medley relays. Garret Shields has the top times in both the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly. Click here for the NWC men's top times. |
