Provisional Cut Highlights Sweep of Pacific

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Natalie Turner's provisional national qualifying time in the 200 yard freestyle highlighted a sweep of visiting Pacific University by Whitworth University in a Northwest Conference swimming dual meet on Friday night at the Whitworth Aquatic Center.

Turner, the NWC record-holder in the 200 free, won tonight's event in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:54.92, leading a Pirate sweep of the top three places. Turner also won the 500 freestyle in 5:10.15. Samantha Kephart also won a pair of events for the Pirate women, taking the 50 freestyle (25.47) and 200 yard butterfly (2:10.93). Brittany Gresset won the 200 yard I.M. in 2:19.47, then won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:17.44. Whitworth's women won the first nine events. Pacific officially won the final two events, the 200 yard breaststroke and 400 yard freestyle relay, after the Pirate entries were converted to exhibition-only.

Whitworth's David Dolphay and Michael Woodward each won a pair of men's events, while Pacific's Nathan Smith won twice for the Boxers. Dolphay won the 200 freestyle (1:48.03) and 500 freestyle (4:57.13), while Woodward won the 200 I.M. (1:59.48) and 200 backstroke (2:05.60). Smith won the 50 freestyle (22.66) and 100 freestyle (50.17). Pacific's men were also credited with wins in the final two races after the Whitworth entries were converted to exhibition-only.

Whitworth will be back in the pool again on Saturday afternoon against Linfield College, while Pacific travels to Walla Walla to take on Whitman College.
