Turner Finishes Fourth in 200 Freestyle

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Natalie Turner moved up four places from the morning preliminaries and finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Turner (Jr., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) qualified for the evening finals in eighth place, just sneaking into the championship final heat. But she moved up to a fourth place finish in a time of 1:51.15. Kendra Stern of Amherst won the event in a time of 1:47.67.

Turner has now scored eight times in eight career races at the NCAA Championships.

Two other Pirates did not reach the evening finals in their individual events on Thursday. Michael Woodward (So., Springfield, Ore.) finished 28th in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.70. Ashley Lecoq (Jr., Renton, Wash.) was 27th in the preliminaries of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.07.

The top 16 swimmers advance from the morning preliminaries to the evening's scoring heats.

On Friday Lecoq will compete in the 200-yard butterfly, while Rory Buck (Fr., Dubai, U.A.E.) races in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The 2009 NCAA Division III Championships mark the first time the men's and women's meets have been held simultaneously. Macalester College is hosting the meet.
