MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Natalie Turner and Rory Buck both broke Whitworth and Northwest Conference swimming records at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday evening at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Turner (Jr., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) finished sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:03.90. She broke her own Whitworth and Northwest Conference record of 17:11.88 set at this season's Northwest Conference Championships in February. Turner has now scored nine times in nine career individual events at the NCAA Division III championship meet. Buck (Fr., Dubai, U.A.E.) earned his first-event points at the NCAA meet by placing 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.34. He broke the previous Whitworth and Northwest Conference record in that event twice on Saturday, first with a 2:02.75 in the morning preliminaries and then again in the consolation finals. The previous Whitworth and NWC record of 2:03.08 was set by Cory Bergman in 2004. Also on Saturday, Michael Woodward (So., Springfield, Ore.) finished 34th in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.04. The top 16 swimmers advance from the morning preliminaries to the evening's scoring heats. Turner's three All-American performances throughout the meet gave the Pirate women 34 points, enough for 20th place in the final standings. Kenyon (OH) won with 560 points. The Whitworth men finished with five points (tie for 51st place). Kenyon swept the titles with 604 points in the men's meet. Go to Athletics Home Page > Swimming > Sports Releases > |
