Rory Buck Hits Second NCAA B Cut in as Many Meets
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Rory Buck hit an NCAA "B" cut in the 100-yard breaststroke to lead the Whitworth University men to a 139-59 win over visiting Linfield College, while the Pirate women defeated the Wildcats 131-74. Buck led a 1-2-3 Whitworth finish in the breaststroke with an NCAA provisional time of 57.91. He also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.60. Kalen Darling also won twice for Whitworth's men, claiming both the 400-yard individual medley (4:14.38) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.45). In a showdown between the last two Northwest Conference men's swimmers of the year, Linfield's Dominic Rieniets out-touched Whitworth's Michael Woodward in the 50-yard freestyle (21.92 - 22.11). But Woodward came back to win the 100-yard backstroke in 55.10 later in the meet. Whitworth's men won the opening 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.72 and Linfield's men claimed the meet-ending 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.71). Natlie Turner, the three-time NWC women's swimmer of the year, led the Pirate women's victory by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:45.19, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 54.98 and leading off the winning 200 freestyle relay that finished in 1:41.91. Ashley Lecoq was also a double winner for the Pirates, claiming the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.42 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.01. Linfield's Chrissy Baumgartner helped get the Wildcats off to a good start in the meet when she swam the butterfly leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:56.95) then won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.63. Whitworth freshmen Abby Pavelko and Danielle Douvikas dueled in the 400 I.M. with Pavelko coming out on top 4:52.17 to 4:59.58.
