Buck, Turner Hope to Make Pirate History
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Rory Buck is the top seed in the 200-yard breaststroke and Natalie Turner has a chance to do what no other Northwest Conference woman has ever done as a Pirate contingent of seven swimmers readies for the 2010 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships March 17-20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Beloit College and The College of Wooster are official hosts for the event. Turner (Sr., South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) is seeded highly in her three individual events. She has a chance to become the first Northwest Conference woman to score in the maximum 12 individual events over the course of a four-year career. Turner is seeded fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:05.80), sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.97) and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.48). Turner has scored in nine previous NCAA events and has finished as high as fourth twice. Ashley Lecoq (Jr., Renton, Wash.) is returning to the NCAA championships for the third time. She is seeded ninth in the 100-yard butterfly (56.55), 19th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.98) and 36th in the 50-yard freestyle (24.23). Christine DeHaven (Jr., Gig Harbor, Wash.) was part of Whitworth relays at the 2008 NCAA Championships and will be competing individually for the first time. She is seeded 24th in the 1,650 free (17:44.03), 28th in the 500 free (5:05.26) and 46th in the 200 free (1:55.88). Jennifer Benson (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) is headed to nationals for the first time. She is seeded 29th in the 100-yard backstroke (59.19). The four women will also swim in four relays at the meet. The Pirates are seeded highest in the 800-yard freestyle relay, where they are sixth with an entry time of 7:36.47. Rory Buck (So., Dubai, U.A.E.) finished 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke in his first NCAA meet last season. He enters the 2010 meet with the best entry time in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.60). He is also seeded 20th in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.34) and 33rd in the 50 freestyle (21.18). Michael Woodward (Jr., Springfield, Ore.) returns to the NCAA championships for the second time. He enters the meet seeded ninth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.60), 17th in the 200 freestyle (1:41.22) and 28th in the 100-yard freestyle (46.18). Kalen Darling (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) is making his first trip to the DIII nationals. He is seeded seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:00.41), 16th in the 500 freestyle (4:34.34) and 18th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:06.83). Whitworth head coach Steve Schadt is concluding his seventh season leading the Pirates. He has coached Whitworth swimmers to the NCAA championships all seven seasons of his tenure and every year the Pirates have scored points at the meet.
