Pirate Depth Shines in Victories
TACOMA, Wash. -- Whitworth won eight of 11 events in both competitions to roll to easy victories, 140-60 on the men's side and 130-74 on the women's, at Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference duel meet on Friday night. The Pirates used superior depth to pull away. Kalen Darling was the only Whitworth swimmer of the night to win more than one individual event. Darling pulled away to win the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.04 then later won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.86. The time in the individual medley is the fastest in the conference this season. Event winners for the Whitworth men included Quinton Darling in the 1000 freestyle (10:30.52), Michael Locatel in the 200 butterfly (2:05.61) and Michael Woodward in the 200 backstroke (2:02.74). The Pirates also won the 400 medley relay (3:45.04) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:14.80). PLU's Jacob Nord won the 50 freestyle (22.90) and the 100 freestyle (49.33) to lead the Lutes. The Whitworth women took it to the Lutes in the early going with consecutive victories in the first four events. Pirate women winning events were Abby Pavelko in the 1000 free (10:48.21), Natalie Turner in the 200 freestyle (1:57.87), Ashley Lecoq in the 50 freestyle (25.67), Rachel Longton in the 200 butterfly (2:17.09), Renae Jennings in the 100 freestyle (57.19) and Christine DeHaven in the 500 freestyle (5:16.15). Turner's time in the 200 is the best in the NWC this season, while Pavelko's time in the 1000 is just off of Turner's NWC-best mark of 10:45.19. PLU picked up its first of three event wins in the 200 individual medley as Shelby Allman clocked 2:25.21 to lead a 1-2 PLU finish. The Lutes' Casey Jackson just touched out Whitworth's Jennifer Benson in the 200 backstroke in the closest race of the night (2:14.56-2:14.81). Rachel Troutt led from the start and touched first in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:39.59. Whitworth will step away from Northwest Conference competition on Saturday as the Pirates stay on the west side to take on NCAA Division I Seattle University.
