Rory Buck Posts NCAA Provisional Mark in 200 Breaststroke
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Rory Buck swam to an NCAA "B" qualifying mark while winning the 200-yard breaststroke and the Whitworth men won all 11 events in a dual meet with visiting Pacific on Friday night at the Whitworth Aquatic Center. The Pirate women claimed 10 of the 11 events in their victory over the Boxers. Whitworth's men won 164-22, while the women won 152-47. Buck (So., Dubai, U.A.E.) won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.11, just under the NCAA provision standard of 2:08.12, leading a 1-2-3 Whitworth sweep in the event. Buck also won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.18. Buck was the only double winner for the Pirate men on Friday night. Michael Woodward (Jr., Springfield, Ore.) outdualed teammate Kalen Darling (Jr., Honolulu, Hawaii) to win the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.61 - 1:44.89). Darling went on to cruise to easy victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.03. Another close men's race occurred in the 200-yard individual medley where Whitworth's Quinton Darling (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) edged Pacific's Brandon Mantei (2:02.08 - 2:03.15). Led by Woodward, Whitworth swept both men's relays. The Pirates went 1-2 in the 400-yard medley relay with a winning time of 3:34.86, then went 1-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a winning mark of 3:22.14. Natalie Turner (Sr., South Lake Tahoe, Wash.) won both the 50-yard freestyle (25.86) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.63) to lead the Whitworth women to victory. Jennifer Benson (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) was also a double-winner for the Pirate women after she won the 200 freestyle (2:00.51) and the 200 backstroke (2:15.21). Pacific got its lone victory of the night when Allison Clark touched out Whitworth's Abby Pavelko (Fr., Wixom, Mich.) 2:15.73 - 2:15.85 in the most exciting race of the evening. Ashley Lecoq (Jr., Renton, Wash.) won the 200 butterfly in 2:14.08 and was also part of both winning relays for the Pirates. Whitworth won the medley relay with a time of 4:09.36 and won the freestyle relay while clocking 3:49.72.
