Whitworth Swept and Sweeps in Return to Play

Whitworth College returned to the courts this weekend after a weekend off during spring break and was swept once and earned a sweep to even the Pirates' record at 6-6 overall and 6-4 in the NWC. Whitworth lost 7-0 at Linfield and won 7-0 at Pacific.

Michael Carlson and Scott Bourne played the closest matches at Linfield on Friday. They teamed to lose 8-3 at second doubles. Carlson then fought hard but lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at #3 singles. Bourne lost 6-2, 6-3 at #4 singles. The Wildcats swept Whitworth in a pair of meetings this year.

But Whitworth turned the tables to sweep Pacific on Saturday. Ed Anegon and Ben Works won 8-2 at first doubles to improve their season doubles record to 8-2 as a team. Anegon then went on to win 6-1, 6-4 at #1 singles, while Works rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles. Colin Storm and Trevor Strang are now 3-2 as a doubles team after winning 8-1 at third doubles. Storm won his #5 singles match 6-0, 6-0, while Strang won by the same score at #6 singles.

The Pirates will return home to host four matches this weekend. Puget Sound comes to Cutter Courts on Friday, while defending NWC champion PLU visits on Saturday. Both matches start at 3:00 pm. Whitworth will host league-leading and nationally-ranked Whitman in a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 10:00 am.
