Whitworth College earned its first men's tennis victories of the season and also got off to an undefeated start in Northwest Conference play over the weekend. The Pirates pulled out a 4-3 win against George Fox on Friday before defeating Lewis & Clark in Portland on Saturday. Whitworth earned the one point win against George Fox when Michael Carlson pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3 singles. Jeremiah Collins won at #4 and Scott Bourne was victorious at #5 by identical 6-3, 6-1 match scores. The Pirates earned the doubles point as well. Ed Anegon and Ben Works won 8-4 at first doubles, while Carlson and Collins teamed to win 8-5 at second doubles. The match was moved to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center from the George Fox campus because of freezing temperatures. The Pirates swept all three doubles matches and won four singles matches to defeat Lewis & Clark 5-2 in the LC Bubble. Anegon and Works picked up their second straight win at first doubles by a score of 8-6. Carlson and Bourne teamed at second doubles to win 8-1, while Collins and Collin Storm won 8-5 at third doubles. Storm went on to win his match at #6 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Collins won 6-4, 6-2 at #5. Anegon worked hard to pick up his first singles match of the season, coming from a set down to win 6-7, 7-5, 10. Carlson won at #3 singles 6-4, 6-3. Whitworth will play its first home matches of the season on Friday and Saturday, hosting Linfield and Pacific, respectively. |
