Whitworth Wins Two at Home
March 18, 2006

Whitworth College moved back to .500 overall this season and 5-3 in the NWC by sweeping the season series against George Fox and Lewis & Clark by 6-1 scores over the weekend. While neither match was a close as the first meetings between the schools, the Pirates still had to work hard to secure the wins.

Whitworth's win over Fox was not as close as the 4-3 win in February. Yet the Pirates had to pull out four singles matches that went three sets. Whitworth won the doubles point when Ed Anegon and Ben Works won 8-1 at first doubles, while Michael Carlson and Jeremiah Collins won 8-4 at second doubles. Carlson won the closest singles match of the night, taking the #3 singles match 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, while Works won at #2 singles 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Collins won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at #4 singles and Colin Storm came from behind to win 2-6, 6-3 (10-2) as Whitworth won all of the matches that went three sets. Trevor Strang added the Bucs' final point at #6 singles 6-4, 6-3.

Whitworth defeated L&C by a bigger margin than the 5-2 score in February. The Pirates swept the doubles, a strong area all season for Whitworth. Anegon and Works won 8-1 again to improve their season doubles record to 7-1. Carlson and Collins won 8-4 at second doubles and Storm and Strang teamed to pull out a 9-7 decision at third doubles.

Anegon won his third match of the season at #1 singles by a score of 6-3, 7-5. Works won his second three-set match of the weekend at #2 singles 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Carlson (6-0, 6-2) and Collins (6-3, 6-0) rolled to easy wins at #3 and #4 singles, respectively. And Storm won his second three-set match of the weekend at #5 singles 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.

Whitworth heads to Oregon in two weekends to take on Linfield (March 31) and Pacific (April 1) in another pair of NWC matches.
