SPOKANE, Wash. - SPOKANE, Wash. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has recognized nine Whitworth University tennis players with its annual Scholar-Athlete award, along with recognizing the Pirate men’s team with its All-Academic Team award for 2007. The Whitworth men had six players honored individually along with the team for high academic work. The Pirate men had a cumulative GPA of 3.468 to earn the team award. Ed Anegon (Jr., Lewiston, Idaho), Scott Bourne (So., Shoreline, Wash.), Michael Carlson (Sr., Stanwood, Wash.), Scott Donnell (Jr., Oak Harbor, Wash.), Kellen Oetgen (Fr., Bellingham, Wash.) and Trevor Strang (Sr., Portland, Ore.) all earned the Scholar-Athlete award. Donnell carries a 4.0 GPA, while Anegon and Oetgen each have averages of 3.9 or higher. Three Whitworth women were also named ITA Scholar-Athletes. They are: Linh Aven (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Betsy Johnson (Sr., Silverton, Ore.) and Rachael McCoola (Sr., Durango, Colo.). The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2006 and spring 2007). In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, 3.) and have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year). |
