SPOKANE, Wash., Wash. - Chris Bailey and Jake Cappel each won a pair of individual matches to lead 15th-ranked Whitman to a doubleheader sweep of Whitworth in Northwest Conference men's tennis play on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center. Whitman (10-6 overall, 10-0 NWC) won the opener 7-2, helped by Cappel's 6-2, 6-1 win over Whitworth's Ed Anegon at #2 singles and Bailey's 6-2, 6-2 win over Joe Wales at #3 singles. The Missionary pair reversed order in the nightcap with Bailey defeating Anegon 6-1, 6-1 at #2 and Cappel beating Wales 6-2, 6-1 at #3. Joe Steele joined Anegon to give Whitworth (8-6 overall, 8-4 NWC) a lift when the pair upset Whitman's Solomon brothers - Daniel and Matthew - 9-7 at #1 doubles in the day's first match. Steele and Anegon trailed 7-6 before rallying to win. Colin Zalewski picked up the Pirates' other point in Sunday's first match when he defeated David Deming 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 at #6 singles. Whitworth is now off of competition for a couple of weeks until the Pirates head to California for several spring break matches, beginning with a contest at Cal Lutheran on March 25th.. |
