The Whitworth College women's tennis team won a match over the weekend that could play an important role in seeding for the Northwest Conference tournament later in the season. The Pirates beat Willamette 6-3 in Salem on Friday afternoon. Saturday's match against Whitman was postponed at the Missionaries' request. Taryn Smith and Chelsea Sweetin were double winners for the Pirates against Willamette. Smith teamed with Jamie Kneese to win 8-4 at first doubles, then went on to win 6-3, 6-3 at #4 singles. Sweetin teamed with Leah Vaughn to win 8-1 at third doubles, then won her #5 singles match 6-1, 6-2. Betsy Johnson and Linh Aven pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) victory at second doubles to give the Pirates a sweep of the opening doubles matches. Rachael McCoola won 6-2, 6-1 at #6 singles. The win improved Whitworth's record to 4-3 this season. This coming Saturday the Pirates will return to Oregon to take on Lewis & Clark College and George Fox University in a pair of matches on Saturday. Whitworth defeated both schools at home earlier in the season. |
