Playing everyone on the roster as the team makes its way to California for a spring break road trip, Whitworth still came away with victories at Lewis & Clark (7-2) and George Fox (6-3) on Saturday. The wins gave the Pirates season sweeps against the Pioneers and Bruins and improved Whitworth's overall and Northwest Conference record to 6-3. Whitworth opened the day with the win at L&C. The Pirates swept the doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. Jamie Kneese and Taryn Smith won 9-7 at first doubles, while Katie Troxell and Linh Aven took second doubles with a score of 8-1. Betsy Johnson and Leah Vaughn rolled to an 8-0 win at third doubles. Kneese went on to win 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles. Whitworth's only other double winner was Johnson, who won 8-3 in a pro-set at #5 singles. Rachael McCoola won 8-5 at #4 and Sandy Fujitani won 6-4, 6-1 at #6. The Pirates immediately got in the vans and drove to their match at Newberg, but only had time to finish the doubles matches before darkness set in and the teams had to scramble for indoor courts. Even so, Whitworth won fairly handily. Troxell and Aven won in doubles again, this time by an 8-2 score at first doubles. Smith and Chelsea Sweetin won 8-5 at second doubles. Kneese won her second straight #1 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Aven won 6-1, 6-3 at #2. Vaughn won 6-1, 6-1 at #4 singles and Fujitani won again at #6 (4-6, 6-1, 1-1 [10-0)]). This Pirates are playing three matches in California this week, beginning today with a contest at NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino. On Tuesday the Pirates will take on La Verne and on Thursday the team will play at Chapman. Both of the second two matches are NCAA Division III West Region contests. |
