Pirates Fall to UPS and PLU

The Whitworth College women's tennis team dropped a pair of tough losses to visiting Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran over the weekend at the Scotford Tennis Center.

On Friday evening, Whitworth earned two of the three doubles points and led 4-2 before UPS rallied to win the final four singles matches and pick up the 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Jamie Kneese and Taryn Smith rallied from a 4-1 deficit to win 9-7 at first doubles. But each dropped a hard fought singles match, Kneese at #1 (7-5, 6-3) and Smith at #4 (6-2, 7-5). Chelsea Sweetin and Leah Vaughn won easily 8-3 at third doubles. Linh Aven picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 singles, while Betsy Johnson won 6-3, 7-5 at #6 singles. Katie Troxell lost a heartbreaker (7-5, 6-4) at #3 singles.

PLU won 6-3 over the Pirates on Saturday morning. Johnson and Aven picked up the Bucs' only doubles point, winning 8-6 at second doubles. Smith won 7-5, 6-2 at #4 singles, and Sweetin won a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 marathon at #5 singles. Kneese dropped a 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 slugfest at #1 singles.

Next weekend the Pirates will travel to Salem, Oregon for a pair of matches. Whitworth will play at Willamette on Friday, March 10th. The Pirates will then take on Whitman on Saturday at Willamette's courts. The Pirates are now 3-3 overall and 3-3 in NWC matches.
