SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth will conclude the 2007 regular season this week by hosting a pair of matches. The Pirates will host Lewis-Clark State on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in the final non-conference contest of the season, then host Whitman on Saturday at Noon in the final NWC match on the schedule. Whitworth (9-9 overall, 8-7 NWC) is coming off of a weekend split against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
Whitworth upset Puget Sound on Friday 5-4, becoming the first team besides league-leading Linfield to beat the Loggers this season. The Pirates' big points came in the doubles, sweeping all three matches. Taryn Smith and Justine Hays rolled to an easy 8-2 win at #3, while Linh Aven and Katie Troxell rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to win 8-3. Rachael McCoola and Betsy Johnson pulled out a tight 9-7 win at #2 doubles. Smith and Hays went on to win their singles matches to provide the victory margin. Smith rolled 6-2, 6-2, while Hays pulled out a 7-6 (5), 6-4 decision. The momentum appeared to continue on Saturday as the Pirates took two of three doubles matches for an early lead against Pacific Lutheran. Hays and Smith came back from a 6-3 deficit to win 9-8 (10-7), while McCoola and Johnson pulled out a 9-7 victory. But the momentum ended in singles as Hays was the only winner (7-5, 6-3 at #6) in a 6-3 loss to the Lutes. Hays went undefeated during the weekend, winning both singles matches in straight sets and teaming with Smith to win both doubles contests. For her efforts, she was nominated for Northwest Conference Player of the Week. The LCSC match has been changed from the originally scheduled date of April 10th at the request of the Warriors' coach. Whitworth and LCSC have not met yet this season. Whitman defeated the Pirates 6-3 in an earlier match this year. |
