SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth's women's tennis team hopes to net its first win or two of 2007 this season when the Pirates host Lewis & Clark and George Fox. Host is actually a relative term, since both matches will be taking place at North Park RC. Whitworth (0-2 overall, 0-2 NWC) will take on L&C (0-2, 0-1) on Friday and GFU (0-2, 0-1) on Saturday. Both matches will be at 2:00 pm. The 2007 season got off to a rocky start with an 8-1 loss at Willamette last Friday (Feb. 17). Sophomore Linh Aven won the Bucs' only point with a 6-0, 6-4 win at #2 singles. Taryn Smith (#4 singles) and Justine Hays (#5 singles) went three sets in their matches. Whitworth was swept in the three singles sets. The following day Whitworth played tough against five-time defending champion Linfield before losing 7-2. Once again, one of the doubles points went the Pirates' way. But many of the singles matches were closer. Betsy Johnson won 6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles and Hays won at #6 singles 6-3, 6-0. Smith dropped her second three-set decision of the weekend at #5 singles. |
