February 27, 2007

SPOKANE, Wash. - Now that it has won its first two matches of the season, the Whitworth women's tennis team will hit the road for one of the toughest trips of the season. The Pirates (2-2 overall, 2-2 NWC) will play at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran this weekend. Whitworth will take on the Loggers on Friday afternoon and the Lutes on Saturday morning.

The Pirates earned their first win with a 5-4 decision over Lewis & Clark last Friday at North Park RC. Whitworth's depth proved superior as the Bucs won the #2 and #3 doubles matches and the 4th-6th singles matches. Betsy Johnson had a big day, winning 6-1, 6-0 at #4 singles after teaming with Rachael McCoola to win 8-4 at #2 doubles. Justine Hays was also a double-winner, taking her #6 singles match zero and zero after teaming with Angela Anegon to win 8-1 at #3 doubles.

The following day Whitworth rolled to a 7-2 win over George Fox. Taryn Smith won her second singles victory of the weekend by a 6-4, 6-2 score at #5. She and Johnson won 8-3 at #2 doubles as well. Johnson and Hays won their singles matches again also, while McCoola gave the Bucs their first victory of the season at #1 singles with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 victory.
