SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth women's tennis team played well, but came up just of earning a victory in the team's trip to Tacoma over the weekend. The Pirates fell 7-2 at Puget Sound and 5-4 at Pacific Lutheran. Whitworth will head to Walla Walla this weekend for the first meeting of the season against Whitman (6-3 overall, 4-2 NWC) on Friday. The Pirates will stay at Whitman for a double header against Pacific (0-7, 0-5) on Saturday. Taryn Smith (Jr., Ellensburg, Wash.) had a big weekend in Tacoma for Whitworth, going undefeated in both of her singles matches and both of her doubles sets. On Friday Smith and Justine Hays won 8-6 at #3 doubles for the only doubles point Whitworth would score at UPS. Smith then won 6-3, 6-0 at #5 singles. Hays dropped a hard-fought three set decision at #6 singles. On Saturday, the Pirates won two of three doubles points to take an early lead against PLU. Smith and Hays won 8-5 at #3, while Betsy Johnson and Rachael McCoola pulled out a 9-7 decision at #2 doubles. Johnson won 7-5, 6-7 (5), 11-9 at #4 singles, while Smith won 7-5, 6-3 at #5 singles. But PLU pulled out the other four singles matches, including a pair of three setters, to earn the team win. McCoola lost 6-2 in her third set at #2 singles, while Hays fell 6-3 in her third set at #6 singles. |
