Whitworth Wins at Puget Sound 8-1

TACOMA, Wash. - Whitworth University rolled to an 8-1 win at University of Puget Sound on Friday evening despite the absence of one of the Pirates' top players. The win improves Whitworth's records to 13-4 overall and 11-2 in the NWC.

Playing without Lexy Harrington, the team's #2 singles player and part of the #1 doubles team, Whitworth earned the season sweep of the Loggers (3-12 overall, 2-11 NWC).

Rachel Burns and Linh Aven played together at #1 doubles for the first time this season and pulled out a 9-8 win to help the Pirates sweep the doubles matches. Katie Staudinger and Justine Hays won 8-1 at #2 doubles, while Angela Anegon and Taryn Smith won 8-6 at #3 doubles.

Burns and Aven then won easily in their singles matches. Burns won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles, while Aven won 6-1, 6-2 at #2 singles. Staudinger improved to 16-1 in singles play this season with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #3 singles, while Hays upped her record to 14-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Anegon added Whitworth's final win at #6 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-0.

The Pirates will continue the Tacoma trip with an afternoon match at Pacific Lutheran.
