Women's Tennis Upends Whitman

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University completed a perfect opening weekend of Northwest Conference women's tennis play with a 6-3 win over visiting Whitman College on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (3-1 overall, 3-0 NWC) took two of three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches to complete the weekend sweep of victories over Pacific, George Fox and Whitman - all at home.

Justine Hays and Katie Staudinger each posted a pair of points for the Bucs. They combined to win the #3 doubles match 8-1 over Jacquie Frank and Katie Oost. Then Staudinger defeated Divneet Kaur 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles, while Hays defeated Alex Robinson 6-2, 6-4 at #6 singles.

Elise Otto earned two points for Whitman. She and Margo Lentz pulled out an 8-5 decision over Whitworth's Lexy Harrington and Linh Aven at #1 doubles. Otto then won the only singles match of the day that went three sets when she came from behind to defeat Whitworth's Rachel Burns 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles.

Burns and Taryn Smith won their #2 doubles match 8-4 over Kaur and Hadley DeBree.

Harrington beat DeBree 6-1, 7-6 at #2 singles, while Aven defeated Lentz 6-0, 6-1 at #3 singles. Whitman's third point came at #5 singles when Oost overcame Smith 6-0, 7-5.

The Pirates will hit the road next weekend to take on defending Northwest Conference champion Linfield and Willamette.
