SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University's Jo Wagstaff has been named the 2009 NCAA Division III West Region Women's Coach of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), one of four coaches at the DIII level to earn a regional award.

Wagstaff, who was also named the 2009 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year last month, led the Pirates to a 21-5 record this season and the team's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament. Whitworth went 16-0 in the Northwest Conference, then won the NWC Tournament in April to end Linfield College's seven-year run of league titles. Overall the Pirates finished 18-1 against NCAA Division III opponents in 2009. Wagstaff has coached the Pirate women's tennis team for 25 years and has led Whitworth to three NWC Championships (1991, 1997, 2009). |
