SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth College's Sarah Marken overcame a 113-point deficit after the first day of competition to jump from third place and overcome Ashley Wornell of Northwest Nazarene in the women's heptathlon at the Whitworth Multi-Event Meet on Friday afternoon at Boppell Track. Michael Tucker of Whitworth won the men's decathlon in his first ever competition. Marken jumped 17'-1.25" in the long jump to move from third place after the first day to first place by ten points over first day leader Wornell. Marken then extended her lead by throwing the javelin 110'-9", further than any other participant. Wornell ran the fastest 800 with a time of 2:32.76, but could not overcome Marken in the final point total. Marken finished with 4,171 points and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championships. Wornell scored 4006 points. Amber Nash of Community Colleges of Spokane was third with 3,868 points. Tucker defeated a field of three in the decathlon with a score of 4,847. He had the best 110 hurdles (19.42) and 1,500 run (4:52.53), as well as the best javelin throw (139'-7"). Bob Omlin had the longest discus throw (122'-0") and pole vault (9'-8"). Omlin finished second with a score of 3,284 and Toby Schwarz was third with 3,022. |
