LISLE, Ill. - Sarah Marken finished 12th in the heptathlon and Derrick Dewindt was 16th in the hammer throw during the second of three days of competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.
Marken, a senior from Casper, Wyoming (Kelly Walsh), finished 12th of 19 competitors in the heptathlon with a score of 4,408. Her career best is 4,470. She went into the day in 10th place, but moved up to 8th with a strong long jump (17'-6"). But she struggled in the javelin, throwing 95'-5", which is nearly 20 feet below her best. Attempting to make up ground in the 800 (the final event), she faded to a 2:33.96. Dewindt finished 9th in his flight of the hammer throw with a mark of 165'-0", well off of his entry mark of 181'-3". Whitworth's final athlete in the championships, Angela Florence, will compete in the javelin during Saturday's competition.
