Whitworth Women Take 3rd; Men 5th at NWC Meet

SALEM, Ore. - Kristi Dickey and Derrick DeWindt each won individual events, while the Whitworth College women took third place overall, while the Pirate men were fifth at the 2006 Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Willamette University.

Dickey, coming off of a late season stress fracture, was able to win the 10,000 meters in 37:21.17 on Friday and finish second in the 5,000 (18:16.44) on Saturday, repeating her performance from last season. She scored 18 of the Pirates' 106.33 points.

Sarah Marken also scored 18 points at the meet, earning them in five different events. She was fourth in three of them: the 100 dash (12.84), 100 hurdles (15.58) and long jump (16'-8.75"). She was also sixth in the triple jump (34'-3") and eighth in the javelin (112'-8").

The Pirates scored most of their points in the field events. Katherine Lane was second (10'-3.25") and Jenna Hays was fourth (9'-3.25") in the pole vault. In the javelin, Angie Florence added a third place finish (132'-3") in a provisional NCAA qualifying mark to a fifth place finish from Kellie Christianson (124'-9") and Marken's 8th place.

Dacia Murillo took third in the discus (119'-11"), while Florence was fifth (114'-11").

Emily Hurd added a fourth place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 11:53.57.

Dewindt won the hammer throw with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 181'-3". He went on to finish second in the discus (138'-8").

Two other Pirates scored highly in two events each, helping Whitworth score 93 points.

Brandon Howell was runner up in the 800 (1:56.28) and fourth in the 400 (50.77). Ben Spaun was third in the 110 high hurdles (15.28) in a season best time, and fourth in the 400 hurdles (56.56).

The Bucs had a strong pole vault when Jacob DePell was third and Tyson Baldwin was fourth. Both jumped 14'-5.25", but DePell had fewer misses. The hammer was also a strong event for the Pirates. After Dewindt's win, Matt McCord was 6th, Joey VanHoomissen was 7th and Clark Pauls was 8th.

Miles Hewitson added a fifth place in the javelin (174'-6") and Jeff Grassley was sixth in the steeplechase (9:51.90).
