Kristi Dickey set a new Whitworth 10k record

SALEM, Ore. - Led by a record breaking performance by Kristi Dickey, the Whitworth track and field teams opened the 2006 outdoor season in style on Saturday afternoon.

Dickey won the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:17.27, nearly reaching the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 36:00.00, but still posting a very strong provisional qualifying mark. Her time broke the Whitworth school record of 36:23.88, previously held by Leslie Nelson.

Sarah Marken also showed she will be a force to reckon with as an NWC heptathlete this season with three strong individual performances. She was second in the 100 hurdles (16.84), second in the 4x100 relay (50.90), and second in the javelin (113-01).

Cody Moore led the Whitworth men by finishing first in four events. He won the 100 dash (11.52) and 200 dash (22.88) individually. He anchored the winning 4x100 relay (44.45) and was part of the winning 4x400 relay (3:24.56).

Brandon Howell won the 800 meter run (1:57.44), finished second in the 400 (50.33) and anchored the 4x400 relay to victory.

Derrick Dewindt was the winner of the discus throw (134-03) and also finished second in the hammer throw (169-05).

Whitworth will stick around town next Saturday to compete in the Community Colleges of Spokane Mini Meet. The event will take place at Spokane Community College.
