Whitworth Tops UPS and CCS in Whit Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth defeated Puget Sound and Community Colleges of Spokane in both the men's and women's competitions at the Whitworth Invitational on a windy and rainy afternoon at Boppell Track.

Brandon Howell missed an NCAA cut by .08

The Pirate women won three events to score 127.5 points. Puget Sound won once and totaled 81 points. CC of Spokane won a single event as well and had 69.5 points.

Kristi Dickey won the 5,000 in 17:57.00 for the Pirates, while Whitworth's Jenna Hays took the 400 hurdles in 1:09.80. Kelly Christianson had a lifetime best throw of 128'-8" to win the javelin.

UPS got a win in the women's 4x400 relay (4:16.55) and Afton Reynolds of CCS won the pole vault (11'-5.75").

The University of Idaho, while not competing as part of the team score, won ten individual events.

The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 124, Puget Sound 100.5, CC Spokane 69.5.

Brandon Howell of Whitworth won the 800 in a season-best time of 1:54.08, missing a provisional qualifying mark by eight hundredths of a second.

Pete Van Sant led the UPS men with wins in the 200 dash (21.90) and long jump (22'-4.25"). His time in the 200 is the best in the NWC this season, as was his mark in the long jump. He was also second in the 400 (49.96) to Jason Giuffre of Idaho (49.29).

The Loggers won the 4x100 relay in 42.76, while the Pirates won the 4x400 relay (4:24.50).

The University of Idaho won six events on the men's side. Josh Guggenheimer came within a tenth of a second of breaking the track record while winning the 400 hurdles in 53.82 (the Boppell record of 53.75 was set in 1995).
