Howell Breaks Records at Sam Adams Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. - Brandon Howell broke a 42-year-old Whitworth team record while winning the 800 run, highlighting the Second Annual Sam Adams Classic Saturday afternoon at Boppell Track in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.

Howell won the 800 in 1:51.34, breaking the record of 1:51.44 set by Loren McKnight in 1965. Howell's time also breaks the previous Boppell Track record of 1:52.54 set by Josh O'Connor of Linfield during the 1995 NCIC Championships.

Other highlights in the men's half of the meet included Eastern Washington's Steve Keith sweeping the 100 (11.10) and 200 (22.72) dash events and Whitworth's Emmanuel Bofa hitting a PR while winning the 400 dash (49.94).

Aaron Galbraith of Lewis-Clark State won the 5,000 meter run in 15:23.78. Brett Axelrod, competing for Whitman as part of the Missionaries' club track program, won both the 110 high hurdles (15.99) and the 400 hurdles (56.05).

The Community Colleges of Spokane got wins from Kurt Williams in the long jump (21'-2.75") and Dave Howard in the shot put (49'-7.25").

No individual won more than one event in the women's meet. Crystal Williams of Eastern won the 100 dash in 12.87, edging Stephanie Hill of CCS (12.90). Jeanne Newman of Washington State also finished just ahead of Hill in the 200 (26.16 - 26.29).

Whitworth's Emily Hurd came from behind to win the 1,500 in 4:56.20, as did the Pirates' Jenna Hays in the 400 hurdles (1:07.34). Whitworth's Mara Daugs posted a lifetime PR of 34'-5.5" while winning the triple jump.

Eastern's Mallory LaPlante won the discus with a toss of 133'-9", and Leslie Baker of CC of Spokane won the javelin with a throw of 125'-4".
