Whitworth Opens Outdoor Season in Fine Fashion

SALEM, Ore. - With 50 of the 70 team members competing, Whitworth's outdoor track and field season got off to a solid start at the Willamette University Opener, highlighted by a pair of Pirate men posting NCAA Division III provision qualifying marks.

Cody Stelzer (Fr., The Dalles, Ore. - The Dalles) continued his hot streak from this winter's indoor season by winning his first outdoor high jump competition with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 6'-8". He was six inches better than his nearest competitor. Kory Kemp (So., Redmond, Wash.) threw the javelin a personal best of 192'-10" to win the event and provisionally qualify for the national championship meet.

Jacob Deitz (So., Mead, Wash.) was the third winner for the Pirate men, taking the 10,000 run in a time of 32:55.69, nearly 37 seconds ahead of second place in the event.

Two Whitworth women also won their events this weekend. Kristen Dormaier (Jr., Hartline, Wash.) won the long jump with a mark of 15'-6". Jo E Meyer (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) was the winner of the 10k with a time of 41:28.00. Emily Hurd (Jr., Portland, Ore.) had a strong second place showing in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:17.25.

Most of the Whitworth team will compete next weekend at the CC of Spokane Mini meet at Spokane Community College.

Stelzer and Brandon Howell (Sr., Clarkston, Wash.) are headed to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at Rose Hulman Inst. in Terre Haute, Indiana. Stelzer will high jump while Howell runs the 800.
