SPOKANE, Wash. - Ben Spaun of Whitworth and Jessica Duran of Eastern Washington lead after the first day of the Whitworth Multi Event Invitational, held today at Boppell Track in the Whitworth Pine Bowl. Men's Decathlon Results / Women's Heptathlon Results (PDF) Spaun leads the decathlon with a score of 3,302. His only event-win so far came in the 400 dash, which he ran in 50.37 to jump into the lead. Steven Bacon of EWU is second with 3,210 points, while Curtis Parrish of CC of Spokane is third (3,144). There are seven men competing in the decathlon. Spaun is on pace to qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field championships. He needs a score of 6,000 for provisional qualifying and a score of 6,600 for automatic qualifying. Duran is the first day leader of the heptathlon after posting a score of 2,707 points. She had the day's best mark in the shot put (38'-7.5") as well as the 200 dash (25.98). Amanda Merrell and Ashley Wornell, both of Northwest Nazarene, follow in second (2,571) and third (2,468), respectively. Whitworth's Kristen Dormaier is on pace to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field championships with her score of 2,338. A score of 4,100 is provisional qualifying. The meet will conclude with Friday's second day of competition. |
