Mattila and Bofa Break School Records at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. - Whitworth University saw two more track and field records fall on Saturday as Liz Mattila broke a 19-year old record for the women and Emmanual Bofa broke a month-old record for the men.

Mattila finished sixth in the 400 dash, but she won her heat with a time of 58.98, breaking the Pirate school record of 59.14 set by Kris Young in 1989. Mattila then went on to finish second in the 400 hurdles, improving her provisional national qualifying mark this season to 1:02.77. Her previous best was 1:02.90 at last week's Northwest Conference Championships.

Bofa won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:50.74, improving his own Whitworth record he set with a time of 1:51.01 at last month's Point Loma Nazarene Invitational. Brandon Howell was sixth in the 800 with a time of 1:54.53.

Dusty Caseria added another win for the Pirate men, taking the 1,500 meters in a season best time of 4:01.05. Travis Huskisson finished second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.24.

Bofa broke his own school 800 record

Bofa, Howell and Caseria were joined by Ben Spaun in the 4x400 relay and won with a time of 4:18.71, just off of their season best mark of 2008.

Jeff Kintner finished third in the shot put with a throw of 50'-8.75", the third time this season he has surpassed 50 feet in the shot. Kory Kemp just missed improving his provisional national qualifying mark in the javelin, finishing sixth with a throw of 193'-0".

Cody Stelzer was only able to clear 6'-8.75" in the high jump, finishing fourth in the event.

Next week the Pirates will host the Whitworth Combined Event Invitational, a meet that was postponed from March 6-7 by snow.
