Stelzer Sets Whitworth HJ Record Again

SEATTLE, Wash. / MOSCOW, Idaho - Whitworth University sophomore Cody Stelzer broke the Pirates' high jump school record for the third time this spring when he cleared 6'-11.5" at the University of Idaho Vandal Jamboree on Saturday afternoon. Several Pirates competed at U of I, while others ran at the Ken Shannon/Ken Foreman Invitational, co-hosted by the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific at Husky Stadium.

Stelzer, who had already improved the Whitworth high jump record to 6'-10.75" and 6'-11" this spring, added another half inch on Saturday. He finished second to Trent Arrivey of Washington State, who cleared 7'-0.5". He remains the second-ranked competitor in the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field performance list.

Jeff Kinter also finished second and also improved his NCAA Division III qualifying mark in the shot put with a distance of 53'-6.25". Kinter finished second to Beau Whitney of Idaho (53'-11.75"), but more importantly, he moved into the top ten of the NCAA D III outdoor performance list.

Alex Hymel continued his spectacular improvement in the javelin. After improving his personal record by 15 feet with a provisional NCAA qualifying toss of 193 feet at Spokane Falls CC on Wednesday, Hymel added five more feet with a mark of 198'-7" at Idaho on Saturday. He is now ranked in the top-ten nationally.

Whitworth freshman Elizabeth Mattila had the top performance in Seattle on Saturday. She improved her NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.47, cutting .30 off of her previous best mark. She continues to be ranked among the top four in Division III.

The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place May 20-22 at the University of Wisonsin-Oshkosh.
