Bofa, Baskett and Schwarz Receive Outdoor Honors
SPOKANE, Wash. -- It is a three-peat of sorts for all three members of the Whitworth University track and field family recognized this week for outdoor season awards by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Emmanuel Bofa is the west region's outdoor men's Track Athlete of the Year for the third year in a row. Gary Baskett is the west region's outdoor men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the third straight year. And Toby Schwarz earned his third USTFCCCA west region Coach of the Year award during the 2009-10 academic year. Bofa, a senior from Puyallup, Wash., heads into this weekend’s NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with the top time in NCAA Division III in the 800 meters. His school-record time of 1:48.69 moved him to the number seven performer all-time in NCAA Division III history in the event. Earlier this season, he also won the Northwest Conference title in the 800 meters, helping the Pirates claim a league title. Bofa has now won five USTFCCCA west region men's Track Athlete of the Year awards - three in a row in outdoor and the last two years in indoor track. Baskett is in his fifth year as throws coach at Whitworth. At the NWC Championships, his group claimed conference titles in all four throwing events and accumulated 98 points towards a league crown. Whitworth qualified four throwers for the NCAA Championships, including Jeff Kintner who is the second seed in the shot put (57-9, 17.60m). It is the third year in a row Baskett has been recognized by the USTFCCCA as the west region's Assistant Coach of the Year (men). Schwarz, in his 14th year at Whitworth, notched a Northwest Conference title in 2010 - the team's third championship under his direction. Whitworth is the third-ranked team in the nation and No. 1 in the west region and boasts seven men's qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. The men's Outdoor Coach of the Year award is Schwarz's third of this academic year. In the fall he was the USTFCCCA women's cross country Coach of the Year after leading the Pirates to NWC and regional titles. Earlier this spring Schwarz was named the USTFCCCA men's Indoor Coach of the Year. All three Pirates are in Berea, Ohio at Baldwin-Wallace College, the location of the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. They will be recognized at a banquet on Wednesday night prior to the start of Thursday's competitions. Seven men and two women are representing Whitworth at this year's national championships.
