Shufeldt Breaks School Record in 5,000
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth's Jeff Kintner and Dusty Caseria not only won events on Saturday at the Duane Hartman Open hosted by the Community Colleges of Spokane, the pair of Pirates improved their NCAA Division III qualifying marks in the process. And on Friday night, Joy Shufeldt broke an 18-year-old Whitworth record in the 5,000 meters. Kintner improved his automatic NCAA qualifying mark and lifetime-best while winning the shot put with a distance of 57'-3.75". His mark is the second-best in Division III so far this season. Dusty Caseria took over the lead 500 meters into the race and went on to win the 800-meter run in 1:51.97. His time is a lifetime PR and a strong NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Emmanuel Bofa was the Pirates' third event-winner of the day, racing to a time of 49.89 in the 400-meter dash. The Bucs had a pair of good marks in the javelin. Joseph Ingman improved his provisional NCAA qualifying mark with a throw of 194'-7" to finish fourth. Alex Hymel continued his consistent performances in that event with a distance of 197'-11", taking third. Shufeldt ran the 5,000 on Friday night in 17:28.53 to finish in second place and break the old school record of 17:30.07 set by Melanie Kosin in 1992. Her time is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Whitworth will continue to try and qualify more athletes for the 2010 NCAA Division III championships next weekend. A handful of athletes will run at the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, while others compete at the University of Idaho in Moscow.
