Whitworth Competes Well at Annual Home Meet
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Over 250 athletes from throughout the Northwest survived gusty winds and snow flurries during the 5th Annual Sam Adams Classic track and field meet hosted by Whitworth University on Saturday afternoon. Unlike 2009, there were now Boppell track records broken at this year's meet, mostly due to the January-like weather. Morgan Clem, running unattached, sprinted to wins in both the 100 dash (12.43) and the 200 dash (25.21) to become the only double-winner in the women's meet. Joe Bartlett and J Hopkins of Washington State University were double-winners on the men's side. Bartlett won the shot put (54'-2.5") and the discus throw (160'-10"), while Hopkins won both the 110 high hurdles (15.65) and 400 hurdles (56.01). Hopkins also led off the winning 4x400 meter relay (3:24.91). Whitworth's men had three event winners on Saturday. Emmanuel Bofa ran to a Northwest Conference-leading time in the 400, winning in 49.17. Steven Acosta improved his season-best in the 1,500 with a winning time of 4:00.73. After two fouls, Jeff Kintner muscled up a 166'-11" hammer throw to win the event. Tonya Turner finished second in the women's 1,500, but her time of 4:48.89 now leads the NWC. Similarly, Erica Cox finished third in the discus, but her throw of 125'-9" now leads the conference. Next weekend Whitworth will participate in the WAOR dual meet at Spokane Falls Community College.
