SPOKANE, Wash. -- While the Whitworth University men's throwers have garnered many of the team's track and field headlines in 2010, Erica Cox has had one of the best women's throwing seasons in school history.

Cox won the hammer throw at the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch Carnival on Wednesday night. Her mark of 165'-10" improves her own school record by seven feet and also greatly improves her chances of going to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships in two weekends. Cox also finished second in the discus (130-7).

Rachel Busick improved her NCAA provisional mark in the javelin while finishing third with a mark of 129'-5".

Despite competing in the 3,000 steeplechase for the first time ever, and running the event by herself, Tonya Turner ran the second-fastest time in school history (11:26.01). She was only 13 seconds off of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Jeff Kintner won both the shot put and the hammer throw on Wednesday. His mark of 57'-9" improved his lifetime PR and automatic NCAA qualifying mark. The hammer mark of 177'-6" is only three inches short of his season-best.

Michael Nahl was second in the shot put while improving his own NCAA provisional mark (55'-1") and Danjuma Quarless threw the shot 52'-2.75" to post his first provisional mark of the season.

Shannon Winant won both the long jump (22'-10.5") and triple jump (45'-8") in lifetime PR marks. The long jump was only one inch short of NCAA provisional qualifying.

Cody Stelzer won the high jump after clearing 6'-8.75".

Whitworth's athletes have one more chance to improve their NCAA qualifying marks. Several Pirates will compete at the Willamette Last Chance meet on Tuesday (May 18) in Salem, Oregon.
