
Pirates Help Washington Defeat Rest of Northwest
SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitworth University had four individual event winners and five national qualifiers on Saturday at the War 3 at Spokane Falls Community College. The meet is set up as a team event between schools from Washington against the rest of the Northwest. Previously the event had been a Washington vs. Oregon affair. As they have all season, the Whitworth men excelled in the throwing events. Alex Hymel not only won the javelin with a toss of 206'-5", he earned an NCAA automatic qualifying mark along the way. Jeff Kintner improved his own national qualifying mark while winning the shot put with a mark of 55'-4.25". He also picked up his first provisional qualifying mark in the hammer (173-0), while finishing third. Alex Couette was second in the hammer with his own provisional mark of 175-1. Cody Stelzer was also a winner on Saturday, clearing 6-8 to win the high jump with an NCAA provisional mark. Finally, Dusty Caseria bested a close field to win the 800-meter run in 1:53.24, a season best and just off of the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Joy Schufeldt led the Whitworth women with a third place finish in the 5,000 with a time of 17:42.78. She was one-tenth of a second under her previous season best. Eric Cox was seventh in a strong field of hammer throwers with a toss of 158-5, just off of her school record. Rebekah Daniels (135-2) and Ka'ipo Rocha (132-1) posted strong season-best marks in the same event. Alyssa Thompson continues to improve in the long jump, reaching 16'-8.5" on Saturday. The final team scores on Saturday were: Men - Washington 451.17, Oregon/Idaho/Montana 286.83; Women - Washington 404.83, Oregon/Idaho/Montana 336.17. Several Pirates will compete in the Northwest Conference decathlon and heptathlon on Monday and Tuesday at Pacific University.
