Both Earn NCAA Qualifying Marks
SALEM, Ore. -- Joy Shufeldt and Tonya Turner ran to new Whitworth University track and field records, and possibly to next week's NCAA Championships, during the Willamette Last Chance meet on Tuesday evening at the Charles Bowles Track. Shufeldt, running by herself, finished with a time of 35:49.50 in the 10,000 meter run. She broke the old school record of 36:17.27 set by Kristi Dickey in 2006. Her time was also only 1.5 seconds off of the automatic NCAA DIII qualifying mark and currently ranks seventh in the division. Turner, also running alone, completed the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:59.14, breaking the old school record of 11:13.14 originally set by Jessica Austin in 2003. She was also well under the NCAA provisional qualifying mark and currently ranks 21st in DIII. Erica Cox won the hammer throw (154'-3") and the discus (137'-3"), but did not surpass her previous NCAA qualifying marks. Emmanuel Bofa won the 800 in 1:50.84, only 45 minutes after finishing second in the 400 with a season-best time of 48.70. Dusty Caseria was fourth in the 800 in a time of 1:52.81. Cody Stelzer improved his qualifying mark in the high jump to 6'-10.25". The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place May 27-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
