SALEM, Ore. - Whitworth University opened the 2010 outdoor track and field season in impressive fashion on Saturday, winning nine events at the Willamette Opener. Three of the winning marks were NCAA provisional qualifiers. The men's throwers were particularly impressive on Saturday. Alex Hymel, an All-American in the javelin last spring, posted an NCAA provisional mark in that event on Saturday with a winning throw of 190'-1". Carter Comito led a 1-2-3-5 finish in the discus for the Pirates with an NCAA provisional winning mark of 154-2. Ron Whitley was second (151-9). Alex Couette won the hammer (170-8) with Whitley picking up his second second-place finish of the meet (169-7). Nick Gallagher won the 10,000 meters in 31:53.27 and the Pirate men won the 4x400 relay (3:22.03). Tyler Alsin took second place in the 800 with a time of 1:57.06. Whitworth's jumpers had a solid day as well. Frank Lima cleared 6-4.25 in the high jump, but had to settle for second place based on the number of misses. Shannon Winant finished second in both the long jump (21-4.75) and triple jump (41-2.5). Joy Shufeldt led a strong performance by the Pirate women. She won the 10,000 with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 36:36.66. Dana Misterek added a second place finish in the 1,500, running 4:52.35. The women's throwers were also very strong on Saturday. Erica Cox won the hammer throw with a mark of 143-1, then finished second in the discus (113-5). Amy Wyatt was victorious in the shot put (39-5). Most of the team is now off for two weeks. But next weekend at least three Pirates are headed to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Newcastle, Indiana. Cody Stelzer is the defending champion of the high jump, Emmanuel Bofa was runner up last year in the 800 and Jeff Kintner hopes to improve on his third-place finish in the shot put. |
