Whitworth Sweeps George Fox

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Holly Tomlin's 13 kills and Tamra Stark's eight blocks led Whitworth to a 30-23, 30-26, 30-26 win over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Nikki Bardwell added 10 kills for the Pirates, while Angie Florence had six kills, six blocks and nine digs. Cassie Moore had 13 digs to lead the Bucs, while Holly Ridings dished 30 assists.

Karina Philliber led the Bruins with 12 kills and no errors in 28 attempts for a match-high .429 hitting percentage. Whitney Kolb added six kills, but none after the first game. Amy Knight had 27 assists and Ashlie Keimig matched her libero counterpart with 13 digs.

The Pirates trailed the first game 14-10 after a ball handling error, but rallied to take a 21-16 lead after two straight Bruin attack errors. Whitworth stretched the advantage to 27-21 on a kill by Florence before winning the game on another George Fox attack error.

The Bruins took a 20-14 lead in the second game after a block by Holly Hutchinson and four straight attack errors by the Pirates. But Whitworth rallied with an 16-6 run to win the game. The Pirates got a season high eight team blocks in the second game, including five during the winning rally. Stark was in on all but one.

The Bucs took an early 10-2 lead in the third set before George Fox rallied to pull within 17-16 after an ace by Knight. Whitworth went back up by four (24-20) on Bardwell's service, but the Bruins rallied one more time to within 25-24 on a kill by Natalie Pickett. But the Pirates closed out the game on back to back kills by Bardwell.

George Fox fell to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the NWC. The Bruins host Linfield in their next match.

Whitworth improved to 3-12 overall and 2-2 in the NWC. The Pirates hit the road for matches at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran next weekend. The UPS match on Friday night will begin at 7:00 pm, while Saturday's PLU match begins at 5:00 pm.
