PORTLAND, Ore. -- (From Melissa Dudek, L&C SID) The Lewis & Clark Pioneers fell 30-22, 30-28, 30-21 to the visiting Whitworth Pirates in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night at the Pamplin Sports Center.
Trailing 17-13 in game one, the Whitworth Pirates went on a 6-0 run capped by a Tamra Stark kill to take a 19-17 advantage. The Pioneers tied the game 21-21 on a Sara Kettler kill. The Pirates, fueled by strong serving, including two aces by Angie Florence and two more from Holly Ridings, went on a 9-1 run to earn a 30-22 victory. In game two, the two teams played a very tight game. Whitworth broke a 27-27 tie on an Angie Florence kill. A Nicki Bardwell kill closed out the game for a Pirates' 30-28 victory. Game three was dominated by the Pirates who took the match with the 30-21 victory. Whitworth's Angie Florence had 12 kills, seven aces, 12 digs and a block-assist. Holly Tomlin had 11 kills and a blcok-assist. Nicole Vander Meulen had 10 kills and hit .400. The Pirates' .256 team hitting percentage was a season high. Sara Kettler led the Pioneers with seven kills and three block-assists. With the win, the Pirates improve to 6-16 (5-6 NWC) and gained some revenge for a loss earlier this season to L&C. The Pioneers fall to 6-15 (4-7 NWC). Whitworth continues the Oregon road trip on Saturday night at George Fox. |
