The Boxers dominated
the first and third games and rallied from behind in the second set
to earn the victory and finish in a three-way in the NWC with George
Fox and the Pirates at 6-10. The Boxers finish the 2006 campaign at
9-17 overall, while Whitworth drops to 7-20 overall.
Peacock led three Boxers in double digit kills as Pacific outhit the
Pirates .222 to .141. Melissa Dunn had a double-double of 11 kills and
21 digs and Joanna Delanty connected for 10 kills and five blocks. Anela
Iseke finished with a double-double of 42 assists and 12 digs.
Angie Florence was the only Whitworth player with double-digit kills,
finishing with 15 to go along with two aces. Cassie Moore finished with
23 digs and Jena Sarrat had 27 assists.
Pacific did not hit its stride until the midway point in the opening
set, using three service winners from Megan Van Domelen, including an
ace, to open up a 19-12 lead. The tenacious Pirates bounced back, cutting
the Pacific lead to 23-21 on an attack error. That¹s as close at
Whitworth would get as the Pirates scored only once more off their own
serve and the Boxers took the 30-27 victory.
Whitworth picked up their offense to open game two, going ahead 10-6
on a kill from Nikki Bardwell. The Boxers bounced right back behind
four service winners by Van Domelen to take the 12-11 lead. The Pirates
then capitalized on a pair of service aces to open up as much as a five-point
lead in the latter moments of the set. Whitworth could not make a 27-22
lead stand up, however, as a pair of Delanty kills brought the Boxers
back and up by a score of 30-29. The two teams traded points until a
Dunn kill and a Whitworth attack error closed a 33-31 final in favor
of the Boxers.
The serving of Jamie Furutani all but put the Pirates out of game three
at the start, hitting six straight points, buoyed by an ace and three
Whitworth errors. Pacific built as much as a 14-4 lead before the Pirates
hit their first point off their own serve. Whitworth never got closer
than seven the rest of the way as the Boxers capitalized on a number
of attack and setting errors to easily claim the win.
