Whitworth Falls at Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. -- (From UPS Sports Information Office) The University of Puget Sound downed visiting Whitworth College 30-25, 30-26, 30-17 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night in Memorial Fieldhouse. The Loggers had three hitters with eight kills each, Jamie Eggers, Monica Groves and Joanna Ricken. Holly Tomlin led the Pirates with ten kills in the match and Angie Florence added eight.

The match got off to a late start due to transportation problems for the Pirates and the two teams played a sluggish first game with the Loggers collecting just eight kills in the game and hitting .048 percent. Whitworth out-hit the Loggers, managing 13 kills as Florence tried to jump start the Pirate offense with five kills but it wasn’t enough as the Loggers took game one 30-25.

The Loggers picked up the offense in game two collecting 17 team kills paced by four each from Eggers and Groves. The game consisted of six ties and three lead changes with the last occurring when Puget Sound took a 23-22 lead on a Groves’ kill. Puget Sound pushed out for the eventual 30-26 win as Ricken collected a solo block and kill in the final points.

Puget Sound led from start to finish in game three as Stephanie Harvey served seven straight points for a 17-8 lead. Two kills each by Ricken, Eggers and Groves and Puget Sound took the game 30-17.

Puget Sound collected 35 kills in the match, as did the Pirates. The Loggers hit .143 percent on the night and the Pirates hit for a .022 average. Eggers had a match high 19 digs for Puget Sound and Florence had 16 for Whitworth. Holly Ridings had a match high 23 assists for the Pirates.

With the loss the Pirates drop to 2-3 in the NWC and 3-13 overall and the Loggers move to 3-2 in the NWC and 8-4 overall. Whitworth travels across town to take on league-leading Pacific Lutheran on Saturday night.
