Whitworth Loses, then Wins, at Willamette

SALEM, Ore. -- After dropping its 11th match in a row during the afternoon against La Verne, Whitworth rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Willamette tonight in a Northwest Conference volleyball match to end the losing streak.

Whitworth's second match of the season against nationally-ranked La Verne went about the same as the first, as the Pirates lost 30-22, 30-21, 30-24 to fall to 1-11 this season. The Pirates hit .102 for the match and were outblocked by the Leopards 10.5 - 2.

Holly Tomlin led the Pirates with seven kills, while Cassie Moore came up with 21 digs in the match, which was played at Willamette's court.

Whitworth lost two of the first three games, but came back to defeat the host Bearcats 24-30, 30-24, 24-30, 30-21, 15-4. The win evened the Pirates' NWC record at 1-1 and broke the 11 match losing streak.

The Pirates hit a season-high .221 for the match and came up with seven team blocks. Angie Florence had a career night, finishing with 21 kills while hitting .304. Nikki Bardwell added 15 kills and hit .344 in the match. Cassie Moore added a career high 33 digs and Holly Ridings had a career high 44 assists.

Whitworth will play at home for the first time this season next weekend. The Pirates will host Lewis & Clark College on Friday night, and George Fox University on Saturday.
