SALEM, Ore. -- After dropping its 11th match in a row during the afternoon against La Verne, Whitworth rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Willamette tonight in a Northwest Conference volleyball match to end the losing streak. Whitworth's second match of the season against nationally-ranked La Verne went about the same as the first, as the Pirates lost 30-22, 30-21, 30-24 to fall to 1-11 this season. The Pirates hit .102 for the match and were outblocked by the Leopards 10.5 - 2. Holly Tomlin led the Pirates with seven kills, while Cassie Moore came up with 21 digs in the match, which was played at Willamette's court. Click here for the Whitworth-Willamette box score. Whitworth lost two of the first three games, but came back to defeat the host Bearcats 24-30, 30-24, 24-30, 30-21, 15-4. The win evened the Pirates' NWC record at 1-1 and broke the 11 match losing streak. The Pirates hit a season-high .221 for the match and came up with seven team blocks. Angie Florence had a career night, finishing with 21 kills while hitting .304. Nikki Bardwell added 15 kills and hit .344 in the match. Cassie Moore added a career high 33 digs and Holly Ridings had a career high 44 assists. Whitworth will play at home for the first time this season next weekend. The Pirates will host Lewis & Clark College on Friday night, and George Fox University on Saturday. |
